The Gothic Cathedral in Bourges is Majestic
Stopping by the Gothic Cathedral in Bourges was our only focus when we arrived in Bourges. Intent on seeing the St-Etienne, we arrived at Bourges sans map and pre-GPS times. We had made no prior plans so were delighted to discover the Marais of Bourges only a short distance from the cathedral.
This marsh laced with canals supports gardens of local residents. At one time providing protection for the city, in the 17th century the Jesuit monks turned part of the marsh into garden plots which continue today. The cathedral on the horizon is our destination. Be sure to go down to the crypt and up to the roof! We had amazing views of the city from the roof and some pretty cool views on the climb up!
Our visit ended with a visit to Cake Thé (74 bis, rue Bourbonoux). From the outside, this tearoom which is built into one of the city’s Gallo-Roman walls is unpretentious. Inside, rock walls warmed with cross-stitched pictures and candle-lit tables provide a romantic oasis for afternoon tea. Both the selection of teas and pastries are amazing. We visited in 2005 so I verified the hours again on 14 Aug 2019: Ouvert du mardi au samedi 12h / 14h et 15h / 18h et le Dimanche 15h / 18h.
