Saint-Germain-des-Prés was my little corner of Paris for this spring visit. I’ve always wanted to see Paris in April! To my delight, I found a place through AirBnb and its location was just perfect. I loved being near the hidden Square Roger-Stéphane. Just follow rue Récamier off of rue de Sèvres to enjoy a peaceful respite in this busy part of Paris. It was the perfect place to relax and plan my sight-seeing route for the next day.

Surrounded by apartment buildings, this secluded square was almost as quiet as the courtyard of my building.

The neo-classical Hôtel de Bérulle  on rue de Sèvres (below) dates from the end of the 18th century. I never got to see behind the closed doors by this site has some nice images of the hidden view.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés Tasty Treats and Shopping

In the next block of rue de Sèvres I discovered Barthélémy, a fromagerie. This delightful shop had more choices for cheese than space for its customers. I don’t know what made me peer behind the door as I entered, but I’m ever so glad I did.

Fromagerie

One of my favorite cheeses is a goat cheese, shaped like a fig and filled with fig confiture. There, on display behind the open door was the fig filled cheese! This little creamy lump of cheese is about 3 inches at the base and 2 – 2 1/2 inches tall and does look much like a fig in reality if not in this photo. And to think this fromagerie is just steps away from my apartment!

Beau Passage was an interesting discovery on rue Grenelle! The passages that I’ve visited before are historic shopping arcades. Beau Passage is ultra modern with shops, restaurants and apartments lining it. It clearly has a woodland theme, at least for the moment, as you can see from the three different entry points.

What is seen above is a reflection of what is behind me as I took the photograph.

Look carefully at the “flower” in the above mural. The whole wall was was a tropical mural but it was the “flower” that captured by attention.

Delightful Maison Boissière

Turning the corner on to rue du Bac, is Boissièr: Maître Confiseur which had a tempting display of   chocolates in their window. Needless to say, I succumbed to temptation!

In the next block I arrived at my destination:  Des Gâteaux et du Pain (Of Cakes and Bread) which is a lovely patisserie that also had tasty bread and croissants. I bought a croissant for an afternoon snack and a baguette destined not only for breakfast but also for some of the goat cheese from Barthélémy.

You can never have too many patisseries, as this little section of rue du Bac proves. Angelina Paris was just a couple of doors down the block!

Interesting Sculpture

Turning on rue Babylone to make the full circle back to the apartment, I discovered this statue where rue de Sèvres meets rue Cherche-Midi and rue du Dragon. This enormous metal sculpture (nearly 5 meters in height) is listed as an historical landmark on Google maps, captioned Anciennes-Granges-aux-Malades-de-Naples. According to Paris Revolutionnaire, this was the location of a hospital in the late 1400s by that name.

Sculpted by César Baldaccini in 1983/85, it pays tribute to Pablo Picasso. A similar statue is on Baldaccini’s grave in Montparnasse cemetery. As this statue was on my route to the metro, I passed it frequently.

I have long wanted to be in Paris in April but this visit will always carry bittersweet memories. Shortly after I left Paris, the spire and roof of Notre-Dame burned. Miraculously, the holy relics were saved as was the building itself. However, it will be many years before anyone can enjoy the beauty of its interior as we have done in the past.

Mon histoire de Mon Petit Coin de Paris (en bref) en français…

Venez avec moi dans mon coin du quartier de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Mon petit appartement sur la rue de Grenelle m’a accueilli avec une cour pavée, isolé de tout le bruit de la ville. Pas loin de chez moi, j’ai trouvé l’Hôtel de Bérulle, un hôtel particulier, dans le style néoclassique. Il y a beaucoup de beaux bâtiments dans ce quartier et je voulais les photographier tous !

Par hasard, j’ai découvert une superbe fromagerie sur la rue de Grenelle. La fromagerie Barthélémy a une belle façade et des beaux produits. J’ai trouvé mon fromage préféré, un fromage de chèvre, qui est présenté comme un petit cadeau sous la forme d’une figue avec de la figue dedans. Comme il est bon !

Un nouveau passage d’exploré

Après mon achat, j’ai exploré le Beaupassage qui a beaucoup d’installations d’art, de restaurants et de boutiques. C’est un nouveau passage qui a été créé en août 2018. Selon le site Sortir à Paris, il est “un temple pour la gastronomie et le bien-être”.

Deux magasins ont retenu mon attention et il a fallu que j’achète quelque chose! À Des Gâteaux et du Pain, j’ai acheté un croissant pour ma petite-goutée et une baguette pour le fromage que j’ai déjà acheté à Barthélémy. Puis, à Boissier, Maitre Confiseur, j’ai acheté du chocolat parce que le chocolat est toujours une bonne idée !

En m’approchant du coin de la rue de Sèvres…

J’ai vu une grande statue en métal au bout de la rue. Elle a près de 5 mètres de haut et elle est appelée Anciens-Granges-aux-Malades-de-Naples. L’artiste lui a donné ce nom parce qu’il y avait autrefois un hôpital du même nom situé ici pendant le XVe siècle. Créée par César Baldaccini, cette statue honore Pablo Picasso. Sur le tombeau de Baldaccini, au cimetière Montparnasse, on peut voir une statue du même style.

En faisant un chemin circulaire, j’étais maintenant presque chez moi quand je suis arrivée au square Roger-Stéphane. Il est bien caché et manqué facilement. Pour ne pas le manquer, trouvez la rue Juliette Récamier piétonne qui s’ouvre sur la rue de Sèvres entre le boulevard Raspail et la rue des Saints-Pères. J’adore ce square. Il est isolé et calme, entouré de grands immeubles et beaucoup de verdure. Quel bel endroit pour me ressourcer après une journée d’exploration entourée de bruits urbains!
