Sous le Chapeau (Under the Hat) is a life-size bronze statue in front of the Hungarian Cultural Center (Institut Hongrois)  in Paris. It is very close to the Luxembourg Gardens so not difficult to find at 92 rue Bonaparte.

As she perches on her bench she appears to be watching the people pass by. Notice her position. The artist could’ve centered her on the bench. Instead, he has placed her to one-side, which invites the passer-by to stop and sit with her.

Dressed in a summer dress and barefoot, she glistens in the August sun.  Sitting here, she looks as hot as we felt on the sunny side of this street! (You have to know that all of our walking was planned so that we were in the shade of buildings!) I had to wonder what she looks like in winter, especially when it snows.

The detail which the sculptor Andras Lapis  has captured here really fascinated me. Look at the folds in the material of her dress and hat. It is so life-like! That hat is the perfect sun shade.

Look closely at the hat and you will see the words Kalap Alatt engraved on the brim. That is Hungarian for Sous le Chapeau (Under the Hat).

I almost missed this detail which helped me learn more about the statue. On her right foot is a ribbon/bracelet with a medallion. There on the medallion I discovered the name of the artist.

I also discovered there is a twin to this statue in Szeged Hungary that the artist created in 1992. This statue on rue Bonaparte in Paris has been there since 2007.

What is it that she is contemplating?

I think she should look up! Just across rue Bonaparte is a lovely little park, Promenade de l’Allée du Séminaire de Jean-Jaques Olier de Verneuil .

This promenade of a park connects the Jardin du Luxembourg to Place Saint Sulpice. It  is named for the priest who founded the Society of the Priests of Saint-Sulpice. He also helped establish the Société Notre-Dame de Montréal which was instrumental in the organization of the settlement Ville-Marie  which is current day Montreal.

The Fontaine de la Paix, has engravings on each of its four sides representing, commerce, agriculture, sciences, and the arts.

Comme il faisait chaud quand nous avons trouvé la statue Sous le chapeau devant l’Institut Hongrois dans Paris. Nous cherchions un répit de la canicule dans le Jardin du Luxembourg et après, à numéro 92 rue Bonaparte, par hasard nous avons trouvé cette statue grandeur nature en bronze.

Perchée sur un banc, elle apparaît de regarder les gens qui la dépassent. L’artiste nous invite à nous asseoir à côté d’elle, laissant un lieu pour nous sur le banc.

La dame est habillée dans une robe d’été, un chapeau de soleil et à des pieds nues. Nous l’avons approchée du côté bien ombragée de la rue. Sa forme étincelante en bronze semblait aussi chaleureuse que nous le sentions.

Les détails avec qui l’artiste Andras Lapis a capturé sa robe me fascinaient. Les plis du tissu semblent presque réels.

Regardez attentivement. Sur son chapeau, on peut lire les mots Kalap Alatt, la traduction hongroise pour Sous le chapeau. En plus, autour de sa cheville on trouve un ruban avec un médaillon. Voici le nom de l’artiste.

À quoi pense-t-elle ? Peut-être le fait d’avoir une sœur jumelle à Szeged Hongrie créée par le même artiste quinze ans avant sa propre création.
