Le Tour de France 2018 – What a Day to Remember!
We arrived at the Tuileries garden for Le Tour de France mid-afternoon after spending our morning on the Bassin de la Villette. A mid-summer fun fair was in full swing in the Tuileries. Knowing that the cyclists ride up Avenue du Général Lemmonier which passes between the Tuileries gardens and the Arc du Triomphe du Carrousel we thought rue de Rivoli might be less crowded viewing option than the Champs Elysée. The cyclists make 8 loops around the Tuileries before making their loops around the Champs Elysée to complete this final stage of the Tour de France.
There was plenty of time to enjoy our surroundings and see a bit of the fun-fair from the distance before the peloton arrived. At the corner where the cyclists entered rue de Rivoli was this beautiful building. The lower portion of the building was blocked from view by the trees of the garden.

Hindsight: since they didn’t let anyone on the pavement in front of the garden fence, inside the Tuileries garden, in the shade of the trees, would have been a cooler location!
Publicity Caravans
We positioned ourselves midway between rue du 29 Juillet and rue Saint-Roch. It was perfect. I had no idea there would be publicity caravans before the peleton arrived! In fact, these caravans precedes the peloton in each stage. What a great way to advertise! This caravan consists of trucks and citroen 2CVs decorated in a variety styles.
We knew we didn’t have long to wait when we spotted the planes flying over the Jardin des Tuileries. It was breathtaking to see the Patrouille fly by!
I envy those who were on the ferris wheel at the moment of the fly-by!
The Peloton Arrives
Finally! The awaited moment! We stayed through 5 laps of the Tour de France final stage before heading back to the apartment in search of diner. What a great day!
The pavement was crowded by the time the peloton arrived. I was standing by a very nice French family throughout the afternoon. However, the arm you will see in the video is of a super animated fan from Spain. I think he enjoyed the tour more than all of us combined!
Lots of shouting and jumping and clapping people on the back! The French gentlemen politely tried to calm him down but this guy continued to “pound” on the Frenchman’s back in excitement every time the peloton circled round!
My advice: Bring lots of water and arrive early. We arrived three hours ahead of the peloton and if we do it again we will probably arrive a bit earlier, bringing something to at least throw on the ground to sit on.
Mon histoire en français…
Le Tour de France rêve : Quel rêve formidable réalisé que je ne vais jamais oublier! Chaque jour je me dis: “Bientôt le Tour de France va commencer ! ” Même si nous sommes en 2021, mes souvenirs du Tour 2018 sont toujours aussi vifs.
Nous avons séjourné à Angers pour le mois de juillet pendant que mon mari a suivi des cours de français. Comme il faisait chaud cet été-là ! Le matin de la dernière journée du Tour nous nous sommes promenés au long du Bassin de la Villette jusqu’à la Rue de Crimée ou il y a un pont levant.
Celui-ci est le plus vieux pont levant en Paris. Avec le pont levant à une extrémité, la Rotonde Stalingrad à l’autre et la plage et les cafés entre eux, notre promenade était très amusante.

Après avoir déjeuner au Paname Brewing Company, nous sommes allés au premier arrondissement regardant le Jardin du Palais-Royal. Finalement nous avons trouvé notre place sur la rue de Rivoli de réaliser notre Tour de France rêve.
Tout le monde était là, épaule contre épaule dans le soleil qui brillait.
Finalement les cyclistes sont arrivés ! Mais non, c’était juste le défilé des publicitaires. Néanmoins, ce défilé était intéressant et amusant.
Plus de quatre heures après ce que nous sommes arrivés à la rue de Rivoli le peloton a commencé ses huit tours autour du Jardin des Tuileries. Quelle sensation de voir les cyclistes le dernier jour du Tour de France rêve 2018 !
