Angers Cathedral
Angers Cathedral, St Maurice, was dedicated in 1025. Romanesque in style, it is noted for its furnishings, tombstones, and frescoes. The collection of Cathedral tapestries numbers 200 with the oldest on display at the Angers Château. It is not difficult to spend an entire afternoon here examining the tapestries and stained glass.

The steps leading up to St Maurice on the east side of the Angers Cathedral provide a majestic path from the river’s edge and the Verdun bridge. Between the bridge and the steps you will find a beautiful fountain.

Inside the Cathedral
Step inside and the immensity of the cathedral is upon you. It is 25 meters to the keystone of the arches and 15.5 meters across. Note the tapestries lining the walls!

Bernini’s altar in St Peter’s in Rome inspired the amazingly beautiful altar. Although the Cathedral is Romanesque in style, this altar dates from the Gothic period.

Stained Glass
The majority of the stained glass windows in the choir date from the XII and XIII centuries. The rose windows, inserted into the XIII century walls, date from the XV century.

The top half of the windows show the 12 signs of the zodiac, representing the time when God becomes incarnate as man in the person of Jesus. In the center of the rose, sits Christ surrounded by the four Evangelists.
Hidden Murals
Whitewash applied in the 1700s hid the murals in the choir. Discovered in the 1980s, the restoration process continues today.

La cathédrale de Saint-Maurice d’Angers m’intéresse parce qu’elle a beaucoup de fresques, de tombes et de tapisseries. Pour moi, la plus intéressante est la collection de tapisseries. Il y en a 200, avec les plus anciennes d’elle étant affichées dans le château. J’ai passée tout l’après-midi à les examiner et les photographier.
Cette cathédrale est immense avec une hauteur de 25 mètres et 15 mètres de large. Les tapisseries ornent les murs latéraux. La cathédrale est romane mais l’autel est gothique. Comme cet autel est magnifique ! Il a été inspiré par l’autel conçu par Gian Bernini à Rome.
Pour la plupart, les vitraux datent des XIIe et XIIIe siècles, mais la grande rosace date du XVe siècle. Des fresques camouflées de la peinture, étaient découvertes dans les années 1980. Aujourd’hui, elles ont été restaurées.
Les deux étés quand je suivais les cours français à l’université ici, je me promenais près de la cathédrale fréquemment. Elle m’a donné beaucoup de plaisir de regarder ce magnifique édifice et toutes les belles choses dedans.
