Arles Provence Van Gogh

Come experience Arles Provence and Van Gogh through the eyes of Linda, one of our readers:

One of the most memorable towns in Provence for me is Arles. I am a great fan of Vincent Van Gogh. In Arles you can pick up a walking tour map at the visitor’s center and tour the ten reproductions on easels depicting the actual places that he painted.

Some of the easels are my favorites such as Café Van Gogh. Sitting in this courtyard under the Starry Sky – I felt very close to the artist!

Arles offers a touch of its Roman past and visiting the Roman Arena places you in the middle of what once was and still is a theater under that same starry sky! This amphitheatre is in the old town and today both theatrical and sporting events are held here during the summer months.

Medieval Streets

A medieval tangle of narrow, winding streets beg to be explored. Everything is easily walk-able and the helpful street-corner signs keep you on track. Children will love Arles, with horseback riding, canoeing, street fairs, train rides and more!

I enjoyed Market Days (Wednesdays and Saturdays) where I was able to shop for those special “take-home-memories” and indulge in some wonderful cheeses, strawberries and wine! There are horse festivals, jazz festivals, art festivals, just to name a few to add to your memories.

The train station is on the river, about a 10 minute walk from town. Arles is easily visited during your stay in Provence, no matter which town you call “home base”. Arles also has a parking structure if you arriving by car.

How about a cooking course? There is a wonderfully outgoing American Madeleine Vedel and her French husband who offer classes. This winter I plan on joining one of their classes based on Truffle hunting!

The best part of Arles (all of Provence, in fact) is that you do not have to have a long list of sights you must see. Instead, you can relax and immerse yourself in what I feel is one of the most beautiful regions of France!
