Tournus Abbey is a wonderful example of romanesque architecture
Tournus Abbey is a Romanesque Abbey of St-Philbert. The town of Tournus is perfect for wandering and enjoying the ambiance of the Burgundy Region. The drive to Tournus via Chalon sur Saône has to be one of the prettiest in this region.
Our destination of the day was the 10th century Romanesque abbey of St Philibert, L’Abbaye de St-Philibert which is a wonderful example of Romanesque architecture. Founded in 616A.D. , take a careful look at the exterior of the church. Notice the narrow slits which are a firm reminder that at one time this was a fortified town.
In 2002, these beautiful 12th century mosaics displaying the zodiac were discovered in the church behind the altar. On the ceiling of the Abbey are beautiful frescoes dating to the same time period. The crypt (above) dates to the 10th century. Dedicated to St Valerian and built around his tomb, the 10th century crypt has 12ft tall ceilings.
The streets around Tournus Abbey are a warren of pathways. We were provided with lots of opportunities to shop for antiques, crafts and chocolates. The sidewalk cafes abound so we had lots of choices when finally decided to stop for a cool drink in the heat of the day.
