Lorraine Cycling – Biking Around the Grand Est
Our day of Lorraine cycling started at our gite in Koeur-la-Grande. We cycled through a wonderfully flat area – something that is not particularly common in this area. The all terrain bikes provided for our use by the owner of the gite were a wonderful bonus to the rental.
I just love cycling on vacation. You see life on a daily level and then in the evening I feel like I can enjoy rich regional specialties like Quiche Lorraine without feeling guilty.
Friendly donkeys who loved being hand-fed dandelions were our companions as we cycled by pastures and beautiful fields of yellow blooming rape.
We followed canal paths, weaving from side to side as we crossed over bridges, keeping off the roads as much as possible. Sometimes the path is a bit less smooth than is desirable but the peaceful scenery more than compensates!
As we wandered back to the gite we passed through several small villages and hamlets. It was a beautiful day in the Alsace Lorraine that brings back happy memories.
Koeur-la-Grande is a tiny hamlet located southwest of Saint Mihiel in the heart of the Lorraine. It is an ideal location as there are a multitude of historic World War I sites to visit.

Each marked site has a link back to the website with information about the town. We drove to all of these and confined our Lorraine cycling to leisurely hours wandering back roads.
