Stravinsky Fountain in Paris Exceeds His Gold Star on the Walk of Fame
He may have a star on the Hollywood walk of Fame, but if you’ve ever seen the Stravinsky Fountain in Paris, you know that this monument to Igor Stravinsky is much more impressive than a brass star in the sidewalk! However, if you’re in Los Angeles, you can find Stravinsky’s star at 6340 Hollywood Boulevard according to the site walkoffame.
So why is there this incredible fountain dedicated to Stravinsky here in Paris?
Born in Russia, Stravinsky lived in France between 1920 and 1939. He became a naturalized citizen in 1934. But still…. None of that information answers the question as to why there is this fascinating fountain here in Paris!

His music was quite novel for the time period
Stravinsky wrote Rite of Spring for a 1913 production by the Ballet Russe. Performed at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the music was quite novel for its time. According to the pbs.org page “[t]he intensely rhythmic score and primitive scenario — a setting of scenes from pagan Russia – shock[ed] audiences more accustomed to the demure conventions of classical ballet.”
The curious little “bird” is one of my favorites.
Each of the sculptures are representative of some part of Stravinsky’s composition. The little bird above is, I believe, from his piece called The Firebird. The wall mural you see in the background is part of a project Mur4Mur. It is street art stencil by Jef Aerosol who is a renowned French stencil graffiti artist.

Stravinsky was known for his unconventional musical compositions. With Mozart and Beethoven as his predecessors, his music is definitely “modern” in style. Now the fountain is beginning to make a bit more sense to me! This unconventional fountain with 16 moving parts is reflective of Rite of Spring and other Stravinsky compositions.

Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle are the creators of this fountain that is one of the first of a series of modern-style fountains in Paris. Tinguely’s sculptures are steel and black – very mechanical in nature whereas Niki de Saint Phalle’s sculptures are bright and colorful.

Pourquoi est-ce que cette fontaine incroyable est-elle dédiée à Stravinsky ici à Paris ?
Né en Russie, ce compositeur habitait en France (1920 à 1939) et en 1934, il est devenu citoyen naturalisé. Mais la véritable raison est attribuée à un spectacle au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Sa composition le Rite du printemps, composée pour le ballet Russe en 1913, a été présentée à ce théâtre. Évidemment le thème primitif et païen avec une partition rythmique intense choquait les auditeurs habitués au ballet classique. (pbs.org)
Chacune des sculptures représente une partie de la composition. Par exemple le petit oiseau représente la composition l’Oiseau de Feu. Cette fontaine moderne est non conventionnelle, comme les compositions de Stravinsky. Ses compositions n’étaient pas comme ses prédécesseurs Mozart et Beethoven.
Qui a été conçu la fontaine?
Cette fontaine non conventionnelle comprend 16 parties mobiles. Elle a été conçue par Jean Tinguely et Niki de Saint-Phalle. Étant le début d’une série de fontaines modernes à Paris, les sculptures de Tinguely sont en acier noir et de nature mécanique alors que ceux de Saint-Phalle sont lumineuses et colorées.
C’est difficile pour moi de choisir ma favorite partie de cette fontaine parce que chaque partie est unique avec ses propres caractéristiques spéciales que j’aime.
