Tours France
Saint Gatien Cathedral
Tours does have its magnificent Saint-Gatien Cathedral. The Gothic Cathedral of St-Gatien was built between the 13th and 16th centuries. This cathedral boasts beautiful medieval stained glass and a 14th century fresco of St Martin and the beggar. In addition there is a marble tomb containing two infant princes, the children of Anne of Bretagne and Charles VIII.

Place Plumereau
Place Plumereau, in the old town is lined with cafés and restored half-timbered buildings. The restaurants seemed to be populated with more locals than tourists which is always a good sign when looking for some place good to stop for a meal.
Tours, in general, seemed to be a town for the French as opposed to the tourists. It is a super enjoyable place to spend time.

Tours – Le Jardin de la France
Tours is a beautiful town so be sure to take the time to explore side streets and spend some quiet time in one of the many parks which give Tours claim to the name “Le Jardin de la France” (The Garden of France). Our time was limited so we are planning a trip back for an in-depth exploration.

Museums
The Garden of Musée des Beaux-Arts, seen above, is a short walk from the Cathedral. Besides the Musée des Beaux-Arts you will also find the Museum of St-Martin and the Musée de la Compagnonnage , dedicated to artisans and craftsmen such as metal workers, shoemakers, carpenters and bakers.

My favorite memory of Tours was our first experience with “carry out” tea in France. We stayed in Hotel Val de Loire (very nice!) near the train station. Breakfast was not included with the room.
So……Around the corner and down the street I went to a patisserie for “take out” tea, expecting styrofoam or paper cups. Imagine my surprise when they handed me a tray with porcelain teapot and cups! Yes, they understood what I wanted and told me to simply return the tray when finished. France…. what a lovely place to be!
